Responding to past interpretations, Jose Angel Hernández suggests that these resettlement schemes centered on the developments of the frontier region, the modernization of the country with loyal Mexican American settlers, and blocking the tide of migrations to the United States to prevent the depopulation of its fractured northern border. Through an examination of Mexico's immigration and colonization policies as they developed throughout the nineteenth century, the book focuses primarily on the population of Mexican citizens who were "lost" after the end of the Mexican American War of 1846-1848 until the end of the century.

Any system composed of elements that exchange signals with each other and occasionally with the rest of the world can be said to be engaged in computation. A brain composed of neurons is one example of a system that computes, and the computations that the neurons collectively carry out constitute the brain's mind.

Edelman presents a computational account of the entire spectrum of cognitive phenomena that constitutes the mind. He begins with sentience, and uses examples from visual perception to demonstrate that it must, at its very core, be a type of computation. Throughout his account, Edelman acknowledges the human mind's biological origins. Like most of his contemporaries, he was conscripted under the generals’ dictatorship and sent in 1982 to hold the Falklands (las Malvinas) against Maggie Thatcher’s expeditionary force. Martin fought in the critical and bloody Argentine defeat of Mount Longdon, and was held as a prisoner of war aboard a British battleship. The Falklands debacle brought about the fall of the dictatorship. Strong and stunning in their often brutal brevity, these haiku come out of a critical moment in Argentine history.
